God of War Laufey

Wait — you're paying €149.99 for a God of War collector box and the actual game isn't in it? Yes. That's exactly what leaked, and no, it's not a packaging error.

What Changed

A product page briefly went live on PlayStation Spain's storefront on October 13, 2026, revealing a God of War Laufey Collector Box priced at €149.99 in Europe and £129.99 in the UK, tied to the game's February 16, 2027 release date. The box itself looks genuinely nice: a light-up resin statue of Faye alongside her companions Phranque and Rue, a 51-card Oracle deck with original illustrations, and a mini artbook put together by the development team. What's missing is the one thing you'd expect a collector's edition to collect: the game. No disc, no download code, nothing. The game has to be bought separately, full price, on top of the box.

For now the listing only exists on PlayStation Direct's European pages, and it's up for pre-order despite apparently going live before anyone meant it to. That's the practical headline. The more interesting question is why a studio would ship a themed box with zero playable content inside it — and the answer is that this isn't a one-off mistake, it's a pattern.

What It Means For Players

If you've been shaking your head at this, you're not alone — fans reacted with real frustration when the leak surfaced, pointing out the obvious math problem: you now need to budget for the collectible package and a separate copy of the game, physical or digital, to actually play the thing the box is themed around. That's not a new complaint in the abstract, but it stings more here because the box is explicitly built around in-game iconography — a statue of a specific companion character, a card deck themed to the story — while offering zero way to actually experience any of it.

This isn't happening in a vacuum, either. The same no-game-included structure has shown up recently around Grand Theft Auto 6's collector packaging, which also drew backlash for charging premium prices on merchandise alone. Two high-profile examples in close succession starts to look less like an oversight and more like a deliberate shift in how publishers think about collector's editions: as a standalone merchandise product, not a bundle built around the game.

Fans reacted negatively to the omission of the game from the box, noting the extra cost to buy both the collectible package and a separate game copy or digital edition.

The logic probably isn't mysterious. Physical game discs are increasingly irrelevant to how people actually play — many buyers already own a digital pre-order or will buy digitally day one regardless. Bundling a code in with a €150 statue box just means eating the cost of a free game copy for people who were going to buy it anyway. Unbundling it means the box can be sold purely as merchandise, to collectors who may not even own a PS5, and the game stays a separate transaction. It's a rational business move. It's also, for the ordinary buyer who assumed
